Roberto and I are happy to have had an amazing summer in which we lived and worked down in Hatteras, NC. Everything was great until Hurricane Irene destroyed many homes and the road leading to this wonderful Island. Our jobs were shut down and we had the blessed opportunity to move up the beach to Nags Head, NC and find work. Roberto and I are excited to get our things ready to return to our home, Nicaragua. On November 8th we will return and our steadily preparing for the NICA KIDS CHRISTMAS 2011. Last year we sponsored with help from many people over 400 kids. This year we will do the same but have a different approach. Last year we noticed that the kids were all focused on the receiving of the gifts and not on the Christmas play and reason for the season, Jesus Christ. We also heard the mothers complain that their kid got a cheaper gift than the kid over there etc etc...we were saddened by this spirit. So this year we have a plan! We are going to be raising $350 to feed up to 400 people and have a community dinner where the women will help prepare the food. I would also like to buy a projector (movie projector) to play a Christmas movie about the birth of Christ for the children. We will also be hosting weekly movie nights for the youth my husband Roberto works with. So if anyone has any clean and inspirational based movies in spanish or with translation they would like to donate...we would appreciate this. We also will be handing out little hand made pillows by our good friend and Angel Maja Ortiz, for info on this check out her amazing work at www.soundandmatter.wordpress.com . I also for fun would like to buy small bags of "dulces" which means "candies" in Spanish to hand out to the kids. Please if you would like to help in any way contact me reddawn1982@yahoo.com and if God tugs on your heart to donate. Look for the link on the right side of this page. God bless, Dios te Bendiga!

Dawn and Roberto...oh..and Gringo(our dog..lol)Dawn Gray Moragahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00976056190823371215noreply@blogger.com53tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5904630311533725566.post-42392039554352919602011-03-31T08:03:00.000-07:002011-03-31T08:23:05.751-07:00Back from 6 months in NicaraguaThe trip was of course as usuall..to fast! We had an amazing year as my husband and I bought our first ever property together where we invision having our own farm. We bought 7 acres near Popoyo in a town called La Virgin Morena, it is nestled near the locals and I have dreams of putting some tree houses in our two giant mango trees for the local kids to come play in. On another personal note, Roberto and I started Paso Popoyo Horse Tours where we have 8 horses and are offering horseback riding tours through the beaches of Guasacate, Popoyo, and Santana. Look us up on facebook under Paso Popoyo Horse Tours. Our loyal workers will be running the business as we are USA bound until fall 2011.
We had an amazing Christmas this year for the kids...were able to with the help of generous American patrons, sponsor over 500 kids. Check out the pictures below. If you are interested in sponsoring a child for $5 for this next Christmas feel free to email me at reddawn1982@yahoo.com
I was also honored and pleased to work alongside of Cadre Academy a hard core missions group who is prepared to go out and work in areas unreached in harsh and heavy conditions check out iamcadre.com. They helped do classes with the local kids for more than a month and we were all sad to see them leave.
The local library in Las Salinas was donated 6 new apple desktop computers which I was able to offer typing classes for a month...the kids picked up so fast and I am happy to say that there are many other volunteers still helping teach while I am here in the USA.
If you are ever interested in taking your talents to Nicaragua to help in any way I can do my best to line you up with many ready to learn children. I will be working a lot these next 6 months saving for our life in Nicaragua and working on new paintings. To see my progress you can check out my Art blog at www.dawngrayart.blogspot.com

Talk to you soon

Dawn
<img style="display:block; Oct. 24, 2009, a day of Joy. After being separated from Nicaragua, the one I love, the kids, my life here....I was overcome with happiness to be back in this land.
All is well here in Las Salinas, Nicaragua. The school house "Brazos de Amor" is now cleaned and reopened for Sunday school, art classses, and hopefully start our English classes in December. All the kids are beyond excited about starting classes and the invite I gave for them all to join our Nicaraguan wedding in ...wow...almost 2 weeks, Nov. 28th. If you were not aware from the previous email updates, I have for the past 7 months been planning to marry my best friend, now fiance and love of my life Roberto Moraga...I could write more but if you would like to see updates on our wedding you can feel free to check out www.nicawedding.blogspot.com . Thanks for everyone's prayers for Roberto's visa to come to the USA we are still hoping for him to come this winter! (have our legal USA wedding) :)
With Thanksgiving around the corner, my wedding, and then comes Christmas, I wanted to write to you before it was to late about some future plans. Roberto and I are wanting to sponsor children this Christmas here and start a Toy Drive to bless some kids who might not have the opportunity to recieve this year. We talked about having the church open the doors to serve "gallo pinto" which is a rice and beans dish along with a drink and have the children show up to recieve a designated gift. Roberto and I are willing to sponsor 65 kids with Nicaragua Art Missions funds through the sales of my Red Dawn Designs art prints. After talking to some of the local moms we configured the price per gift would be from $3 to $5 per kid. If anyone would like to sponsor a kid, please let me know. I am able to recieve paypal through www.nicaraguaartmissions.blogspot.com or through the email reddawndesigns@yahoo.com. You can also mail my USA residence and my left hand woman, Debi, can handle stateside funds. I am also getting the local Nicaraguans, and Americans who live here and can afford to do this to participate as well. Please email me the specific details if you would like to sponsor a gift for a child as shown below.

1. A. Male B. Female
2. 1 (1 month - 2 years)
2 (3 years- 6 years)
3 (7 years-10 years)
4 (11 years- 14 years)

so for example if you would like a girl who is 5 years old to sponsor email me, (B,2).

Dawn G. In six weeks, a lot has happened. We were able to complete the first two weeks with US Gringo's Daniel Pullen (professional artist) and Ryan Ziegler (high school student) working among the local area of Las Salinas and venturing into the orphanage of Managua and also La Chureca. With lots of memories and rewarding moments teaching and taking the joy of Art to these children I felt that the first two weeks flew past us. I did stay an extra month with my Nicaragua friends and the good ol' family at Popoyo Surf Lodge www.surfnicaragua.com. With the start of a new English class in the making with new teachers Mike Moremen and Kim Yemma, they will be able to put to use the supplies I am leaving this season with Nicaragua Art Missions. We also had outstanding numbers of kids that started coming back to Sunday school once we opened up the doors to the "Brazos de Amor" house. Since I left last September I have had a few locals help teach the kids on Sundays and the art classes were canceled. Thankfully now we have some people offering to facilitate and use the gifts Nicaragua Art Missions has left to reach the kids while I am stateside this summer saving up finances to return.
On a personal note, I am very happy to say that I am engaged. It happened on May 4, 2009, I said yes to a man who won my heart with his ability to Love, Care, Calm, Encourage, and carry the beauty of meekness while serving the Lord and others. I have been friends with local Nicaraguan, Roberto Moraga, for three years. We dated last year and I needed some time to grow and learn, so we agreed we would keep the friendship alive and close until we felt God lead to other ventures. Coming back to Popoyo this spring I had no idea I would leave engaged and planning a November Nicaraguan wedding, but I did..I am. I am not surprised that the one place I love, the people I love, the culture I love, would call me into becoming even closer to it's origin...a spouse of a native. Roberto loves God with all his heart and is quite the opposite of me, he's quiet, patient, not very artistic, and quiet dark compared to me. We share many things in common such as our faith in Jesus, our love for people and kids, surfing, being adventurous, and living on faith not by sight. This will be a very interesting road for us I am sure. Like many typical Nicaraguans, Roberto is not wealthy, actually his family of 7 siblings (I LOVE HIS FAMILY SO SO MUCH) all live together in a small house with a dirt floor. On the other hand, they are happy, healthy, and love each other, and that's what matters the most. I know God will lead us into some new territories and I really think that the work I will be doing in Nica will be strengthened once I am married to man who will become a partner to my work there. I will keep you posted on the wedding and other news. Below is a photo of us together and a few of him.
I also will share the picture of my last horse accident in Nicaragua on April 20, 2009. My horse and I were heading out when I made him gallop up a hill not seeing a cable wire I am lucky to only have gotten knocked out with a blow to my arm and stitches to my nose...I could of gotten my head lacerated is what the locals said. I am very thankful..and if you saw my face now, you can not even tell I had an accident. Here are the pictures...and please know I am thankful for your prayers and support.

I will be raising money through my art sales for the next trip planned in September and will be hoping to start building onto the Mama Ruth Jewelery and Art Store to create a small coffee/smoothie place and rancho where we have in mind to start many community ideas with the local women and kids. For information on my art please visit www.dawngrayart.blogspot.com

Below is also a video of FUEL TV's On Surfari Nicaragua
which aired us in Nicaragua last summer and shows just what Kind of work Nicaragua Art Missions is doing. The trip has been fast and wonderful so far. We wanted to share a little about what's been going on so far and some photos of our journey. We have been able to spend some time in La Chureca (the dump in Managua where kids, families live), have had some art classes, mural projects, and most importantly have had time loving on these people, the people of Nicaragua.
From the moment I stepped off the airplane on Wednesday, April 8th, a quick tear filled my eyes along with the familiar scents of a country I had grown to call my home. I hurried to try to get to my luggage not remembering that the motto of Nicaragua is "Hurry up and Wait", yes this is the place where God instills patience. The smiling faces that greeted me continue to do the same as every morning our team, Ryan Ziegler, Daniel Pullen, and I spread out among these Nica territories. You have no idea what it was like for me to return to church on Easter Sunday and for the first time in 6 months see the people, the children whom I spent the past two years with. I was bomb rushed with tears and felt silly as they all hugged and embraced me and the tears fell of Joy. I realized at this point how hard it was going to be to leave. As I am praying daily not to think about this, I have grown sad thinking of having to balance my two homes..my kids here..my Nica family...my wonderful horse...and my home on the OuterBanks which has my family, friends, work, and amazing church. I know God will lead and I will follow and I am so thankful that for this time he has blessed me with the ability to Love a people, a Country this much. Thank you all for your prayers. We will be traveling to Managua today to visit a orphanage and do a lil' art with the kids. Saturday we have lined up a big competition of soccer with some local Asterroles kids verses the Gringos, I will definitely be posting pictures..so stay tuned.Dawn Gray Moragahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00976056190823371215noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5904630311533725566.post-65557467685297823512009-04-05T20:16:00.000-07:002009-04-05T20:53:19.979-07:00NICA BOUND APRIL 8th<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 209px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX9YQxii_k5M9qlTZQv16z9vy6QZiZMXgZTNmdo-2XZVmPi056-daBde9PopUqLxIv848wTcLnwpzemtDdLv16rYO3OwYbSSnwqCOoB64UQuGg1iRMrxE1QND_S0CVb89JzrAawgjF9Zc/s320/hurley3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5321421436067227346" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLK4nU_Mu64uYRr1mHO1c-Zpy98UyT7Ij1toiZICTLqP6VDi-0g90qfN_npeQ98mDpEdr_fGwdR_2iO0VsHjWKIhY2dLUOjKw4vwoaNxMDf2A8hpVxW34Jevh8zqQr4mjg03LZ9GETwWg/s320/adanpic.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5321421432068822930" />
I WANTED TO GIVE YOU ALL A LIL' UPDATE ON THE TRIP TO NICARAGUA. I wanted to drop a quick update to everyone on -Nicaragua and some of my lil' adventures back here in the states.
Once again coming back from Nicaragua.. I felt the salt air invite me back home to the Outer Banks, NC. Along with the warm smiles of faces that embraced me and gave me the peace of God, and love of a feeling of safety and real "amistad". I have found myself enjoying my time daily resting in the knowing that God had placed me here for a rest and rebuilding of passion for Nicaragua and a rekindling to be used daily in my own backyard where he would lead. Everyday has been a special little journey of faith as I meet with old friends, and make some amazing new friends, I know this season..is in God's arms and the time is unfolding in a clock not turned by my own two hands. I am plugging away working at Local Outer Banks coffee shop Front Porch Cafe and working on a few Nicaragua Art Mission fundraisers as well as participating in some local charity functions. I am believing to be going back to Nicaragua for a short period some time in April and will see how God aranges these next few chapters in Nicaragua. I have been in contact with some of the Nicaraguan families for updates and feel extremely blessed to hear that the lil' art/jewelery store "Mama Ruth's" is excelling and growing. Even though I am not there with my Nica families and lil' kids...my hearts and prayers...along with soo many of yours are being answered. I will post some updates soon and as of now I am still raising funds through the selling of my art prints via www.nicaraguaartmissions.blogspot.com and www.dawnreddawn.blogspot.com to make it back to Nicaragua and continue with IAM.
I love you all and thanks so much for all the encouragment and love that so many of you are great at sending my way. I pray this year has provisions of peace and love to you all!

love....Dawn Gray

me at my new job : Front Porch Cafe mp 6 Kill devil Hills
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 312px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7lYTOncYXCVRgmzrh1ex8GqI0S5WfqbmYMjQTO7YEgwY6d0kgSmFtPJ5gPRX4Curbq84qyO6kd5o1FdHuN3k6ErtifDpfPBAdpHx-Y8evfPhpccIkqLt5NHe0NIbvp-_fsqUTt-SK0cw/s320/barista.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5291155913022781522" />

The store..still up and doing great! I will be helping out with the local community and spending time getting refreshed and working on my art until I go back to Nicaragua in March.

I am looking forward to visiting all the people whom I missed so much and replying to all your emails..please keep me in prayer as I have this past Saturday experienced a bad car wreck in which "Gloria a Dios" no one was injured but there was major car damage on both accounts. All the frustrations that come with the legal, insurance, etc are a handful..and as of now I am acostumed to the Nica style bike riding and have no problems getting around on two wheels..just pray that I adapt to the bitter cold here..ha.. I haven't had to breathe in this coldness in two years and trying to run for exercise the other morning was like needles shooting into my lungs.." De donde es el Sol?"

I am also running a Christmas promotion selling originals for only $150.00 which should keep me quite busy. I love you all and will be around..shoot me an email reddawn1982@yahoo.com

<img style="float:left; For starters let me apologize for the late news update, this has been a very busy few months with lots of exciting and special events.
Just as the sunrises here in Nicaragua at 5am and the heat of the day begins to put our paces into motion so does the constant change and needs here in Guasacate, Nicaragua. Having to recap this entire few months is engulfing my mind as I began to type as I try to find the words of how to sum this all together. One thing is for sure..and is certain..God is Good..his vision and Love never fails. We had so many amazing people come to visit us these past few months and all of them attributing so much from the supplies they brought, their helping hands, to the constant Love they poured out among the people. So thank you so much to : Melissa Diamond, Mark and Candie Mcgrath, Maleah Duncan, Brandon and Lauren Kari, Shayne and Shannon from Fuel TV, Jessica and Nic Mclean, Billy Diggs, Kim Diggs, Todd Levy, Brent McCoy, Ronnie Brooks, and so many more...thank you so very very much.
One of the exciting parts of this season here in Nicaragua is that we our now working our classes out of a new school house built by JJ and Kim Yemma called "Brazos de Amor". This new facility will be used to teach the art courses, future English Courses, and Sunday school classes. Not to mention many other possibilities for the future. Once again..thank you JJ and KIM....your support and Love are amazing! From day one at "Brazos de Amore" I felt a presence of peace in the building..as Melissa, Kim and I began to place new plastic chairs and tables that the Yemma's donated for us around the place...I saw the vision..the kids..the small futures of Nicaragua. As only images in my mind I turned to face the realities...the lil' children in the neighborhood had followed us into the building. One...two...three...six...seven of them joined us and began to look at all the art supplies we had piled in there among other kid friendly eye candy. We explained to them the plans of the new building..as there eyes beamed and they danced around yelling "whippeeeeeeeee!" I laughed thinking to myself, some things never change whether here or in the USA the same enthusiasm and exuberance with the word WHIPEEEEEE stays all together the same. I raced around in my busy lil' head thinking of the many things we would need to make this place a fluid and organized facility. Book shelves, cleaning supplies, more books and teaching supplies, a rug (for the raw cement floor), a TV/DVD for Spanish Sunday school courses, more paints, more paper, Games, the list began to overwhelm me as I smiled realizing that I was not the supplier...He was, God. I never fail to find myself in particular situations where I am battling with my desires to take charge and figure things out..in Dawn's lil' time. This is when I reflect, How did this building get donated? How did you arrive in Nicaragua? How were all the doors in my life opened? I knew the answer and the peace in knowing I was out of the drivers seat lavished over me. The next months to come we have seen the classes grow from 20 to a max of 62 local kids that come to the classes whether on Sun, Wed, or Saturdays.
We had some friends of mine Melissa Diamond, Mark Mcgrath, Brandon & Lauren Kari, along with Maleah Duncan who had came to Nicaragua loaded with supplies and clothing, along with a loving attitude. I was happy to see that their hearts where here for the people and not just for the indulgence of the beauty of Nica and the great surf. We were able to bless some local kids with clothes, nice shoes, wonderful art/school supplies and the best of the best jewelry kits for the women. One of the most powerful and fulfilling nights of my life was shared with these people as we started a new outreach of "Dinner with the Locals". I had lined up in advance with one of the women who makes jewelry, Anna Ruth, to partake in a dinner night at her house where we supplied the food and the hands to learn to cook. With this news, her mother "Mama Ruth" was extactic..you see Mama Ruth loves to cook...and she loves company. We arrived us girls to help cook and learn how to maneuver in a "Nica Cozina" I laughed so hard as we made complete Kooks out of ourselves so many times trying to cut the "American way" or any of our attempts in the kitchen. Believe me when I say these Nicaraguan women sure no what they are doing in the kitchen. The night continued as Brandon, local FL professional artist (www.melodyofthesoul.com) began to bless the local surf groms with board paintings..they crowded around him with amazement in their eyes. We ended up having a wonderful dinner piled around their family table which we pulled outside in front of their house surrounded by the plastic chairs and their finest dinner plates. We felt like we were Kings and Queens at our banquet. We even turned the dirt floor in front of the table into a dance area as we cranked up the salsa music and let loose. It was the most joyful night as I watched the 30 or more locals/family members join around laughing at my crazy gringo friends bust moves..finally some of the brave local girls jumped in. Ha.....it was a riot. Brandon, Lauren, Maleah and I ended up painting a big mural at the local fruit stand which the owners thank me and comment on it's beauty and ability to attract guest almost every time I pass to go to church. Pics below. Among the other many fun days passed with these friends, two days..they were flown out..and we had more...more..more fun. The Fuel TV crew, Shayne and Shannon with "On Surfari" came down to run a show from Popoyo Surf Lodge and to headline events such as Braddigan's Love Light and Melody in La Chureca, JJ's life here, and the IAM's (www.iamissions.com) Nicaragua Art Missions events. It was exciting as we got to be blessed by Shannon's art on Saturday's art class and share the beautiful music of Jessica Mclean with our local church. They joined in with a community mural where we had over five professional artist: Brandon Kari, Dawn Gray, Shannon McIntyre, Daniel Caldwell, Maleah Duncan, and all the children and locals among the town that helped out. It was beautiful...and is yet another addition to IAM's mission to bring Color to the world..and the people of Nicaragua. As I had arranged yet another night of making dinner with Shannon, Jessica, Kim Diggs and all the girls of the house of Mama Ruth's we were planning a show down of over 35 people with the guest from the FUEL TV crew and my Outer Banks friends...it was definitely going to be super fun. We arrived and one by one each of us began to filter around to help, the girls began to work in the kitchen and some of us got out the paint to start painting a sign for a local store and to bless this family with color as well. Brent McCoy began to paint the local surf boards as Billy Diggs, Todd and Ronnie began to play with the local kids and visit with the families. It was a blessing that led tears to my eyes to see the friends from my home join me here and bask in the love that these people wanted to give...it was beautiful. One of the most exciting parts of the night was when I had a surprise guest arrive with all his friends....Brad Corrigan aka Braddigan, arrived with his friends from LOVE LIGHT AND MELODY (www.lovelightandmelody.org), they had arrived to stay at Popoyo surf lodge for fellowship for the weekend and had came into town just in time to land a sweet nica party. I ran out to meet them and greeted them...as we walked up to Mama Ruth's I saw their faces welcoming the new guest and also wanting to know..."Who are all these people?" I knew they were about to be super blessed. Having heard for two years now Braddigan played on the cd players of the local houses from the widespread cd's that were given out during Brad's outreach here in Nicaragua. He was a star! I announced that Braddigan was here and they didn't really get it..until he sat down bust out the acoustic guitar and started singing in Spanish the songs from his album. Their eyes widened and one of the local women/mom's I know grabbed my arm jumped up and down and said.." I need to go get Andy!...Need to get Andy!". You see Andy is her 4 year old son that plays Brad's music all the time and is said to be his biggest fan...I laughed and told her to run..run. The night was a blessing as we prepared to food for over 40 people and began to eat in the dark as we spread out flash lights over the food when we learned...yet again (it's a weekly occurrence) that the power was out. It made the night all that more memorable and beautiful.
There was so many amazing times while my friends where here that I am not able to record them all...just that GOD had really blessed these trips among the fellowship...and it's been a great summer.
I have one more extremely exciting thing to tell you about. Fuel TV blessed us with a donation from Shayne and Shannon's church and friends which was able to build a small tienda (store) for 500.00, yes I built a small store for only $500.bucks..ha. It's in Las Salinas in front of Mama Ruth's house and is called "Mama Ruth's" It is going to be used to sell the local women's jewelry and art work of the community. (check out photos below). The store has about a few more weeks of work and I am praying to be able to make $400.00 more to add a nice door and shelves to show the work. It's a small start to bigger ideas here in Nicaragua.
I am heading out now to go buy some supplies for the new store and to help the local girls buy some more jewelry supplies in Masaya. I will keep you updated soon..and check the website for more photos. www.nicaraguaartmissions.blogspot.com

Love in Christ

Dawn G. To start I am going to thank God for my life, and for sending angels after me constantly. I will start with the bad news and talk about the million and one other great and amazing events that blend the bad out.
June 15th...11am...I had just returned from teaching art class at the La Virgin Public school with Kim, her daughter Mikayla, and our good Nicaraguan friend Ivette. I was kind of full of energy and happy from all the kids smiles whom I had just left...and yelled out to Kim..."I'm going to take off on Ezekiel for a lil' bit for a joy ride on the beach....I need to work some of his energy out since he hasn't been ridden in two weeks." (Ezekiel had a small leg injury that put him in pasture rest for two weeks). I saddled up and headed out down the dirt road towards beach break...singing and talking to Ezekiel and swatting the misquitos that labored hard to pester me. Ezekiel and I rounded the bend and started to trot on the sand down towards Popoyo...he was full of energy and was trying to break out of my grips....I had him in a hold and as we came closer to Popoyo he tried again to take control and lunge out. I pulled him into a tight circle and just then..it snapped. I felt the bit break out of his mouth and within seconds he was off. He knew he was free. He turned towards home and sprinted as fast as he could without any control. Having no connection to his mouth or face I began to carefully think...Ok..First of all I am going to take my feet out of the stirrups in case I have to jump off, and then I pulled my body up onto his neck grabbing the front of his nose at a full gallop and trying to stop him...this didn't work. He gained speed, and I realized we were probably at his max speed...and the fastest I had ever sat on a horse. I realized even if I jumped on sand the speed and the impact could lead to broken bones, or fatal consequences. I decided to see if he would stop at the giant cliffs by beach break...gaining speed towards the cliffs (2.5 miles later) He ran straight toward the river to my left (the river mouth opens up toward the beach )..I thought...holy crap he's going to throw himself into the water, which was fine by me...I could break my jump. But, No...he darted last second to the left of the water and jumped a four foot ravine...at this point the local boys who were working construction on a beach front house began to run after me seeing I was in trouble...I knew there efforts were in vain...we were probably over 30 or 35 miles an hour. I saw...the cliffs ahead..and began to panic realizing if he didn't stop, he was going to run into the forest area to the right and I was in trouble then. This was the first time, I opened my mouth and screamed as loud as I could for him to stop....HO....Ho000000000000000000....nothing. He veered to the right the last minute at the cliff and jolted into the woods...I began ducking under trees that nearly cut my head off three times...and after 1.5 miles of this....I saw the paved road from Aesterroles ahead...I screamed and began pulling Ezekiel's ears, punching him..using my legs and body to try to halt him...everything...towards the last mile I screamed in terror louder than I have ever...no one was around..only cows....I then realized, I might die...I might die. I watched my life flash before my eyes again as he lept onto the asphalt road without breaking stride...and almost came head on with a car...tears rolled down my eyes as I realized I had to jump or take the chance of Ezekiel running us both into a car. I saw a truck ahead of me with a bunch of Nicaraguan workers in the back, I yelled "HELP ME ....HELP ME" as loud as I could about 6 times when I realized I was speaking in english "Ayuda Me" I screamed in spanish and the guys looked back and one jumped out the truck to try to stop "Zeek" but he jeered to the right of the man and nearly took my head off by another tree. I saw a steep hill ahead and as he slowed down to about 25 miles an hour...I through my leg off half way up the hill and jumped....I don't really remember the fall. A guy had my body and was putting me in his truck saying...Jota Jota's...(JJ's ) I nodded and started shaking in pain. They laid my body down in the middle of the rancho as all the comotion of the workers here piled around me and asked me questions..I was just shaking and holding my head...then I saw Kim...I burst in tears...and lost control as she started crying. It's like seeing your mom, best friend, lover or whomever you totally love and realize you can loose control b/c your safe now. JJ got in action and got me to the house where we realized how lucky I was and put ice on my head which had a few knots and besides some cuts on my elbows and knees...I was ok. Only a concussion. I lay there and realized how blessed I was. Kim walked in with the bit and bridle and the news that Ezekiel had ran back here and was ok.....just scared. I wanted to comfort him so bad, even though all the Nica's wanted to kill him. Poor thing. I looked down and saw that the cooper bit had broke in two..crazy..I had never seen this occur before. ...so after all this an soreness for three days...I was back on my feet and riding horses and waves again. ha.. Ok..for some good news... Here's the scoop from the camp. We had Andy Irons, Corey Lopez, Freddy Pattachi, Mike Parsons, and a few other guys come down and stay at Popoyo Surf Lodge for a week. JJ and Kim were honored they choose to stay here and I not being to impressed that they were cool just because of their profession...at the end of the week had a different mentality. I would say that I was so stoked on their compassion and ability to take the time to give things and spend time with the Local Nica Boys/fans...I watched as a few guys looked up at their idols with smiles from ear to ear...eager to talk or be around them. It was rad. (for a lil more info and photos visit www.nicaraguaartmissions.blogspot.com).
Other good news...the classes are going amazing, Berri and Kim have been helping out and it makes a huge difference to have such a great support team down here. Also Joe Pennovich, and Joe Johnson's families came down from florida with their 8 in total kids....it was so fun to have them join us at church class and on the beach with the Nica kids. I would have to say that the best surprise of the past month has been from this past Friday. I walked out the door to my room after hearing "Senora...Senora" I turned to see a women and a small boy...I glanced fast and shut the door thinking it was someone begging for food or bringing me a hospital receipt (which happens frequently)...."Un minuto" I said. I turned to them smiled and watched as the boy's face smiled and said "Dawn..Dawn"....I stood there with my jaw open for a few seconds and finally screamed "Elias!" His mother stood there smiling and I ran and embraced them both...it had been almost a year since I had saw them. He, Elias, in case you don't remember is the one kid that really inspired my whole mission to move full time to Nicaragua. I worked with him in the dump (La Chureca, in 2006) and found a kid with some amazing natural art talent. After, working for a few weeks with him, I kept a few of his paintings and raised money for his education through selling his art work in the United States. After countless times missing each other in Managua last year...I bought a cell phone this year and was determined to get back with him. After a few emails, I was able to get someone to track him down from the dump and give him my email and cell phone information...within a month he started corresponding and we agreed he would come to Popoyo and stay for a few weeks to a month. I was getting super frustrated with the lack of transportation and un ability to go to La Chureca and Managua. The problem is...that I can't go alone, and I have been waiting for a couple people or a guy to go in with me. It would be pretty dang dangerous to go alone...so I waited..and waited. After a few phone calls to Elias, I once again lost hope when I was surfing Popoyo one day and after returning to my belongings realized my cell phone was stolen...along with my glasses...etc. Two weeks later, this was my surprise...he was here! Yipee. We spent the day together and Kim and a bunch of friends took his mother Corney and him out to dinner. The days since then have flown by. Thanks to Mike Moremen who is housing him down the street from me, he will be able to stay here and focus on some art projects and help me out here with the kids. We all went together yesterday to the public school class and with the help of Elias Noel, Kim Yemma, Mike Moremen, and some amazing Nica chica's Scarlett and Angelica we were able to teach a big 45 student class a cool under water scene art/mobile project. I will keep you updated through photos from these classes..enjoy the ones below and also visit www.nicaraguaartmissions.blogspot.com for many more.
Jewerly update with the women: Kim,Elias, and I are heading out to Masaya and Granada to pick up more supplies today for the women Julissa and Zulma who are making a living here selling their jewelry. I am so excited to see how God is opening up the doors for the arts here and for the business's that are supporting them by selling their work. Thanks So Much.
Running club update: I am down to one girl..the other girls faded out with a few that had problems b/c they had lil' ones they couldn't leave in the morning that often ( I think there husbands were getting mad...they don't really have day care here..ha) The other girl had problems with serious pains from her enlarged viens in her legs..so now it's just Jullissa and me...and we are going to put out flyers in town to try to get more women next week.
Supply need info: paints, canvas paper, crafts, kids clothes, kids books, educational teaching books for children's church (in spanish). beads...etc...etc..

I hope all is well with you and I look forward to hearing back from all my wonderful friends who I miss so so much

love ya

DawnDawn Gray Moragahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00976056190823371215noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5904630311533725566.post-63768684901603603242008-06-17T05:45:00.000-07:002008-12-11T04:30:38.431-08:00Andy Irons & Corey Lopez visits Popoyo Surf Lodge..kids classes are going amazing!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJrHJHGX0urF2ZktJefFORcBrpTC72ijNdQhhLmOmdZKKr_mtaot5Ptwe2pwSJACYm4Nxpf8nQjd0oFyolrDEEeeNtHYFk8XtOMjcgEVzPutZiPzgPxI1jG2MvhR6mViswBK5fhL_Q7vM/s320/pro+visit+photos+014.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5212841072404215762" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiicnThZgGwgxi05UyZ3KFSRtcJnw68DnfktN6u_MsuUi52EaawIqhkw-qR72BczFqMlxBCOHcA0NDIHUrovTopR6FAKJUmRV-dftVPBNbSSW-ua37uCzH3f2JSm8E4ecPxSB7Zs31DKnA/s320/pro+visit+photos+028.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5212839203013340194" />
I wanted to write a really quick update of last weeks big news and I will be posting some more photos of the art classes and updates in the next day...but for starters. Kim and JJ Yemma, owners of Popoyo Surf Lodge were able to host pro surfers Andy Irons, Corey Lopez, Freddy Pattachia, Mike Parsons, and others..it was rewarding to see them choose our home here as their first choice to stay in Nicaragua. For me, I guess I meet so many amazing people..musicians...surfers...that I'm more impressed with their hearts..and attitudes. I was stoked to say that they were so sweet and giving to the local Nica boys and fans...they handled it with grace. After scoring good waves here, JJ took them up to the Condo up north where they got good "MG's and Sandino". I thought it would be interesting for my readers to here this..and know what a great job Wavehunters did on booking the Pro's stay at Popoyo. I also would like to thank Corey, Andy and the boys for being so kind and giving to all the crew here. I know JJ and Kim and all of us look forward to your stay here again.
As for the Nicaragua art classes, Berry local amazing massage therapist and significant other to the all famous outer reef shredder Manuel. Instructed our Sat. night art class at Club Zion, teaching the kids how to make mask from (white strips of cast material). It was so unique and fun for the kids. This week we will paint them and decorate them. As for Saturday day, I had over 20 kids total come out for surf/soccer fun day..and had a great time playing on the beach and with over 7 boards, 3 boogie boards, and eager kids..we had a great lil' surf morning. I am so thankful for the boards that were donated to the kids from all you friends in the states. We have broken two and now have a total of 5 useful boards and always seem to gather a few more from local surf boys or tourist for the day. If anyone is coming here on a surf trip and wants to join us for some fun on the beach..Meet us at 9am..at beach break, in front of JJ's. Everyone knows..just say Beach Break. I want to wait on telling you more about my classes with Kim Yemma at the public schools on Saturday, and will post more info later with the photos. write soon...

God bless

dawnDawn Gray Moragahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00976056190823371215noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5904630311533725566.post-88485490812680523412008-06-06T14:29:00.000-07:002008-12-11T04:30:39.513-08:00Rain, Got Baptized,Giganitic Frogs, Sweat, 32 Misquitos, jewelry goes out with a bang<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYPRH7jZ3nz_E2A-ZiQHj_zPPq6h74RQy0o_QiURSWi_p7Rt1PAKOymBq1jM4-GDRA2Vu8HdJ6PUkFRBcR-GjrSlGyCcbE6M1-3gYx5vdeJx8MedQEgS0hvXpvnd3zKb6gT_sNep9T-YU/s320/zulmaprint.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5208895124969696162" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgcUzHIoR3BOELLlxzNhZHLmN3D-Jac6K9VhNmL4HXaa05mY0XpMUkA0mp5jaiVJBBoXPAcqg0nPzax4kKNtAVMY0mIMPtBlIo0PpPLLi9iHX3EDLaKQRqBjZq8sv6cUlcAI5dqBAr92w/s320/mebaptism.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5208894392485251090" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWJI0MSilKw3o-lsKkFh0IDMFAyml3CsBDdA3pk4OFqAv2hzfz8lv4BpI92Xw62jwTRi2ztuLh_wEjDKjMDS60m0E6AAjvSux2xwCYhFKZ_nnOHQBHbCkbXsR15yjeaSET5S8BKiSCaI4/s320/usbaptism.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5208894040690474418" />
Well...the rain has been coming down pretty hard these past few days..along with rain comes thick mud and gigantic frogs..but the land has turned into a Green Tropical Lush Rain Forest..with the brightest trees...flowers..and vivid landscapes...it blows you away. Sweat pours off me so badly that I take an average of 3 showers a day..in my outdoor shower.I got baptized with our church...along with 5 others..and it was the best experience of my life..check out the photos. I counted 32 misquito bites all over me..but I couldn't be happier. I am busy organizing classes..as church classes have now grown in size doubling..the kids..they just pour in. I rode my horse, Ezekiel aka: Zeek to La Virgin about 5 miles away and visited the public school..in which they gladly are going to let me teach twice a week starting this Monday, art classes. So as of right now I am teaching only on Monday mornings, Wednesday nights, Thursday Days, Friday day, I have two La Virgin students that have been coming to learn more painting skills(as they both posses the drive and talent),Saturday beach days, Saturday nights art, and Sunday morning with Berry and Kim Sunday School. I am praying about trying to take on the same classes at the Library again, but then I feel the need to really organize and get the classes I am all ready working with more structured. I think the kids have so much fun in the non class atmosphere I provide as a teacher....it's always about having fun and making them smile and laugh. I could honestly care less in the end if the project worked or did not..because they don't know the difference..they only want to have fun..express their joy. This is why I am here. I guess I can be more structured and more like an instructor with the older woman or men who are learning jewelry or other forms of arts. I am so excited about this. More than anything I am excited that we have gotten the jewelry made by the family below into three locations (hotels, restaurants) and they are starting to sell rapidly. Praise God.. and I know..this is the start of the beginning of the Co operative...Keep this in Prayer.

On a personal Level..I am well..dropping weight fast due to the non stop moving, sweating, and exercise. It's the constant sweating that will find you taking four showers a day..ha. I have had an allergic reaction to my skin..possibly from bad water (ocean) or a mild case of nica chicken pox..I plan on going to the clinic tomorrow. I have been really digging into reading the bible and other devotional books and have been getting filled up spiritually...Today..this was a good nugget...Deuteronomy 11:12-16.
Renato and I have given our relationship the best kind of start..over to the hands of God and have agreed to start as friends...friends that love each other but want to focus on our ministries here and see where God may lead our futures. First and foremost we must give God our time. I do love that we can work well together, him with the young adults, me with the young girls and children...and it's fun to learn more of our such amazingly different cultures...wow..he must really find it frustrating to deal with my stubborn independence and drive...and I am learning daily to walk in Grace and take thoughts and actions captive thinking of others before stepping out with my words or motives...it's hard..for everyone..but It really helps you walk in God's light and peace.. Pray for the english classes that will be starting this week..and if anyone is interested in some specific items that are needed for the kids..please email me...Love you Guys

Dawn
reddawn1982@yahoo.com

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf_Ed2G8CwekS3DmlqtyNbQrPUfl6-4WtEfW_T4TC8k5Hav9zM79cOFzhDkOcqdznGAYdD0M5pIiH9WUQOBVmX4h9HDEDldSp1rh0BuKcg45hethngT2sFHdYELlxGsIiLTMz9STOth9c/s200/ourchurch.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5208889308232873026" />

Well...the rain has been coming down pretty hard these past few days..along with rain comes thick mud and gigantic frogs..but the land has turned into a Green Tropical Lush RainForest..with the brightest trees...flowers..and vivid

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuSwmne61W7RK7geR4sdj5APQNQUABPN6FIgLHWCA_asYeck7SBtBFy7KGzApX1Lgzfk7967AamCSNmgZyDHD74-x_8Y86BExLymYThQ8Zea2DblAbmHZYIUYRDVdLl25f5xTNukH53ig/s320/nicatree.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5208888292314623986" />Dawn Gray Moragahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00976056190823371215noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5904630311533725566.post-90743784316093252872008-05-13T20:09:00.000-07:002008-12-11T04:30:39.821-08:00Back to Nica..back in the Saddle..Literally!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLRZcXz2g-cjyC2mh8aCUbBGrP2TCALl4jS8V1IcCe2VhWuLvnXjh7tbK9vb_4YhlNEvA6L6iJp1p1DgtfewGQNnAZcLFJNET0Ysu5TGQ46E5CxJ1ycez5mCy2-1Wvd1KUQsNNkE_IloU/s320/clubziongirls.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5200069756170059042" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTaPKRwjfg1UGGierMsDsu46hsbawueXdohMdbnVTkDd4MCzRF6XpNklIXDi-aO-uOZuwi97Zcy5pGs3x8-DlrWL-t-77KRfl-vtM11sof0GU2ZrYaiWJt9vy3IuKZARHSje4lQmO3rWw/s320/meartclass.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5200068003823402258" />
Hola Amigos!
Well, I am back in the saddle again! Literally! Nicaragua welcomed me back with the scorching heat, radiant smiles, willing hearts, and happy children. As I arrived on April 24th to find all my friends and new family of Nicaragua doing well in spirit and health. After 3 weeks, I could honestly write enough to fill a book but I know you guys will not read it..ha! Ok...Gosh...where to start.
The second day back at camp, I started meeting with two of the girls for the exercise womens Nica' club. We agreed to meet every morning at 5 am Mon-Friday. What started as two lead to today....over 8 women showed up. They are loving the tennis shoes that were donated from the Running Zone in Florida. They have me bewildered how excited they are to learn new exercises and to have that time to spend together in the mornings. I pray that this year God uses this to draw us all close and that we can build strong relationships. Besides meeting with them, art classes and working at the church (Nicaragua Club Zion) is back in motion. Meeting Sundays day and night, Monday nights, Wednesday nights, Fridays, and Saturday nights. I have a few up and coming new lil' artist that are coming over during the day once a week to work with me privately. I am excited to show you soon their first oil paintings. A few women who are in financial dire need to provide food for their families are going to be working with me tomorrow to start making jewelry to sell to the tourist to provide some sort of income. I owe a big huge thanks for the blessing that Sheena and Ben of Bethel Temples of CA group left to these people. Stocking us up with Rash guards for the kids to surf in, beads/jewelry kits, and paint. You guys have no idea how much this meant to me and these people! We look forward to you visiting again.
Yes, you are probably wondering...what has happened crazy to Dawn yet? Well...physically I am doing awesome, spiritually amazing, and all around great! I did experience some traumatic events these past few weeks at the local medical clinic. The first accident happened as Kim and I were heading back from taking some local kids to lunch. We pulled her landcruiser around the corner of the pot -holed filled road to see a small pick up truck in the middle of the road with about 15 uniformed school kids standing around two bodies. We new right away...this wasn't good! The next moments were a blur Kim and I jumped out found the boy and girl who were the bodies on the road and started helping the situation. I first went to the boy and he was coherent and in a lot of pain...a broken arm and possible leg. I got to guys to position him against a tree as I ran over to Kim who had the girl who was out cold in her lap. As we started praying I started frantically asking what had happened. They were all piled into the back of the pick up truck (all 15 which is totally common here) and they must of hit a bump and two fell out. The girl laid there for what seemed like 20 minutes but was only a few minutes and we prayed...Kim layed her hands on her head and checked her pulse...she was alive, and all of a sudden opened up her eyes and started a silent cry...the kind of cry that is made only when you are in so much pain you can't utter noise. A friend had just arrived from surfing on the road and we slowly piled the two kids into the truck as we sped off to Rancho Santana Clinic. It was all a blur, I stayed with the girl in the one room medical facility for 4 hours as they at first said she had to go to Managua's hospital b/c her blood pressure was sky rocketing and could mean severe head trauma....we waited and every 30 min it slowly declined. They kids both ended up leaving as Kim paid their medical bills and they got doctored up. Other than a few broken and bruised bodies...they were ok...they were alive...and thank God. I was exhausted. The next week I was in the middle of one of my Sunday school Sunday night lessons when one of my lil' gals Junette started crying...I looked in her sobbing eyes as she showed me her big toe. It had an abscess the size of an egg. She was in so much pain. I carried her home and informed her mother that I wanted to pick her up in the morning to take her to the clinic. That night my good friend Jodi Hudy from the Outer Banks NC arrived and she got to experience the clinic the next day with me. After a night of not sleeping due to Jodi getting attacked by a 3 1/2 inch scorpion at 1:30 am...we were both probably pretty exhausted, and we were welcoming Jodi here full on Nica style. We arrived to pick up Junette at her house and found that her brother another one of my art students was experiencing blood clots and infections in his nose and infections all over his arms and legs, so we all headed out. I watched with horror as they had to cut into Junette without any pain killer or novicane and squeeze her abscess. She grabbed my arms and cried out so loud that the nurse and I both started crying and I held on and tried to comfort her...I then realized how my heart was going to ache for my own children one day...after two hours of doctoring the two kids. I told them how proud I was of their bravery and we headed out to the local pulperia where Jodi blessed their family with a few weeks worth of groceries and I gave them each 10 cordobas which they excitingly bought their own soda with. I tell you one thing after this experience...these people have to be tough here...the medical resources and pain killers and exams we have...are completely different here...it's hard core. I was frustrated with life when I arrived back in my room....realizing how much I had...how much more comfort I had growing up..being able to get help when I was hurt...simple things. Then I looked up on my walls in the room and saw the photos I had pasted of all the children's smiling faces.. all their laughters I heard in my ears helped me see that this was all relative. They were happy and I was here to encourage....encourage more of these smiles daily...encourage God's love to shine more on their lives...and just to be there...here...Nicaragua....God I love it here!

I have a lot more to say...and it all seems to be important..but this letter must end. I am happy..all is good....the kids....the horse..the classes...todo (all). I look forward to your emails .

Love DawnDawn Gray Moragahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00976056190823371215noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5904630311533725566.post-61924508960569665792008-04-06T11:43:00.000-07:002008-12-11T04:30:40.360-08:00april newsletter and update! ..Going to Nica!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZQkh5NN55Xl5gLwqNTiznOClUDWOsZtCLog12HME60ojRPphuSG5CTLADAZpLMyWAIPNVwkDH9WzVo9SqmoZ0VaHdbnYLrFtRyvrDsO2VdUZKvuVAO3PiZ4lPu6flAWVA6lxiDljzRYY/s320/missyandme.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5186210871186291538" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGPTwtZDb7GbqycG2cPrdsjdISSIWC47XgnVikZ0eeNZ5n7GQwjgtompTBFQtuznoW6bEvd6-DhNttFfL4FTDJiY8SG18_vPr-t8c3XeNCyo0oSUfWEMqqb4SAoMb-9fEKmOEFFhyphenhyphenpYVs/s320/outforfun.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5186210497524136770" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibt1bVs0OCluiSulomTvcB7LphVaWRbXJhtXfZIwcvm6Zf-_GC1WTHe9A_dn-MfWtyhVjvEofAxWsz5EXZ4qaiCvLKconKbJkpOY2-DaO8M31Xq_t2_KbqxdH8A2sq-PvA7ksDXB8fiFE/s320/eastermissy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5186205446642596610" />

Hey Everyone!
Just wanted to drop a quick monthly update to all of you. I am leaving for Nicaragua on April 17th..yep..two weeks away! Wow, time flew by. I have been working hard on painting, working at the restaurant, getting supplies for the kids in Nica, and yunno…surfing. These past few weeks have honestly flew by due to the 14 hour days I have been working at Grill’s restaurant (www.visit grills.com) pulling double shifts. I do have a few good sentences of Good news though…I have made some great new friendships and have been able to be a light to a few girls from the area. One in particular, Melissa Diamond, local Cocoa beach surfer girl, has taken on the position to rep for Red Dawn Designs art work along the east coastal areas. We have opened up accounts at Juice and Java, Cocoa Beach and Ocean Sports World, Cocoa Beach. She will be helping place prints along the coast to raise money while I am away in Nicaragua. Her contact is listed below. She’s awesome and a great new friend….THANKS MISSY! I also had an art show on March 7th at “The art of Coffee” in cocoa beach where we enjoyed great fellowship and art work! I also have been going to this amazing new church called, "The Way" www.waychurch.com and they have been such an great fulfillment of God's word in my life. The teaching, worship, fellowship makes it kind of tough to go back to Nicaragua...but I know where God is got me. If anyone is in the Melbourne area..you should for sure check out the church. I want to tell you of an amazing artist Brandon, who runs Melody of the Soul Studio www.melodyofthesoul.com, he has advertised selling 10 paintings for a one time 100 bucks (normally 450 or more) to raise money for Nica Art Missions….such a giving heart., check out his site..it will blow your mind. I will be trying to wrap up answering emails, finishing paintings, and getting everything ready to go these next two weeks. Contact me if you can after 7pm via phone or email whenever.

Look forward to getting back and trusting God with leading the way to shining his light this next year in Nicaragua.
I am still praying for the remainder 1,000.00 to complete this mission..so thanks to all your prayers I know the art will sell and God always…always provides!

Any stateside mail or donations can be recieved at my Grandparents house:

Dawn Gray
1117 Milissa Court
Va Beach Va 24364

A special thank you to:

Kim and JJ Yemma
Sue and Ross Cruden
Min and Topps Hair Salon/Rockledge FL
Joe Pennovich..thanks for the job at Grill’s
Julie and Joe Johnson..thanks for all you do
Kyle at Juice and Java
Ocean Grove Surf Shop/Rob Stumley
Wendy Messenger
Morgan Mcdole
Daniel Caldwell..thank you for the art books
Tom Dugan
And a big thanks to Brandon

Mellissa Diamond's contact info 813-601-9672 she is the new Red Dawn Designs Rep for FL

Pictures below...Dawn at 16th street... For
starters all is well, the kids, the church, the surf
camp, the horses, everyone and everything! The art
classes have continued at the church along with every
Thursday and Saturday surf lessons out front at beach
break. The sad thing is that we have 30 or more kids
show up on Saturdays and now that they broke two
boards, only have 4 boards to use. I am praying and
looking for some BIC or BZ fun shapes to bring back to
the kids, or any surfboards for that matter. We have
been keeping busy with making sea shell windchimes,
and painting murals at the Las Salinas Bus Stop, along
with many other busy lil' art projects. Thanks to
helpers such as Kim Yemma, her mother Sandy, Mike
Moremen, Lily, and all the locals we were able to turn
a horribly ugly old bus stop into a bright lil' corner
in town. Check out the photos below. The mishap of the
month would have to be the other morning as I was
heading out for some surf walking through the ankle
deep water I stepped on something soft and got
attacked in the ankle by a dang sting ray. I toppled
over and then grabbed my board to paddle out, I made
it to the outside when I realized the pain was getting
worse..."How long is this going to last I asked
myself, I had no idea!" My friend, Mike looked over at
me and said "Dawn, what's wrong?" Obviously my face
was twisted in pain... "I just got stung by a sting
ray, how long is this pain going to last!" He looked
really worried and said.."I'ts about to get worse!
Paddle into the next wave now!" I did and luckily, as
I got off the board and started walking I collapsed,
with Mike behind me he helped me walk to the car and
gave me a ride back up the 1/2 mile trec...thank God
for good people. I can honestly say that the pain was
astounding as the poison burned through my leg for 1
hour the only thing I could do was to stick the sheets
from my bed in my mouth and bare down on them with my
teeth and scream. The next week, I prayed everytime
the kids were around the water to "Please Lord, don't
let one of them experience this pain!" After an hour,
it was all good...slightly numb, but I was up and
walking and surfed the evening session without pain.
Now that the bad news is written, the most exciting
news is that I met with the Mayor of Las Salinas, and
the Co operative project is in full operation now,
they gave me the land and now I just need to get the
ball rolling and contact the rotarians of Managua and
contact the rotarian members of Outer Banks club. I am
excited because the town members are so very excited
about this new project and I know it will bring so
many jobs and provisions into the families of this
coastal region.
I am also saddened and happy alltogether to say I
am leaving on the 13th of December for the Outer
Banks, to visit family and friends (Christmas) and to
move to FL for two months to work as a waitress and
try to sell my art to raise money for my return. If
anyone is interested in paintings durring this time, I
will be dedicating a lot of time to commission pieces
and murals. I arrived back in
Nicaragua on the 29th of October after a long 3 weeks
in Florida where I participated in the Christian
Surfer Conference and painted a few pieces of art to
raise money for my return. I was able to be blessed
with the opportunity to paint a few commission pieces
for Joe Pennovich, Lance Rogerson, and Dave and Lisa
Milton…thank you very much. The Christian surfer
conference was amazing, a time of rekindling my
friendships and raising awareness along side of IAM
(International Art Missions) of IAM and Nicaragua’s
mission. I was able to be hook up with the Walking on
Water Crew, Jessica Mclean, Braddigan, and all my good
ol’ pals of the Outer Banks during this time as it was
the start up of the Walking on Water movie premieres
(www.walkingonwater.org). Sitting back and watching
some of my closest friends use their gifts of singing,
video production, surfing, art, and many more for the
Glory of the Lord was refilling and reignited a flame
within my own heart. However, the whole time I surely
missed Nicaragua and all the kids. I want to give a
quick thanks to these few people that made my trip to
Florida such a blessing and comfortable time: JJ and
Kim of course, Joe Pennovich and his whole family,
Ross, Sue and Danny Cruden ( I love you guys), Karen
of Christian surfers Cocoa beach, Lily Beacham (you’re
a real sweetie), Braddigan (for your joy that
surrounds you all the time), Dave and Lisa Milton (see
you in Nicaragua), Chris Peck and family (drive down
from Costa soon!), Coral Fisher ( you put it together
in an amazing way!), and the rest of you that I forgot
thank you so very much for everything! Now on to
Nicaragua News:
So as I loaded up on
Taca airline 360 I trembled a little with fear as my
growing anxiety of flying took turns looping thoughts
of fright throughout my mind. I grabbed the seats
sides and prayed.. “Your will be done Lord”. I started
to panic as the loud awful noise of the engine caused
the passengers to glance nervous gestures around each
other and I and many others asked the raising question
“Is everything Ok?” They motioned “Yes” and we were
ready for take off..as the noise boomed louder than I
have ever heard before, my anxiety kicked into full
gear as my vision faded in and out and my palms were
wet and wanting the hand of my mother. The lady beside
of me was doing the father son and holy ghost motion
with her hands and looked at me and grabbed my hand as
if she knew what I needed. …1...2.…3 we were off.
After Two hours we landed safe in Nicaragua, and I
couldn’t help but wonder where this growing anxiety of
flying was coming from…Never until this year did I
experience this fear..I am asking for you all to pray
for my courage to overcome this obstacle. I pulled all
my luggage that was filled to the brim with art
supplies, and clothes for the Nica’s out of the ramp
and headed out the door where I ran into big ol’ bear
Donald. Donald is like the Heffe(which means boss in
Spanish) of Popoyo Surf Camp, when JJ is not around.
He is a big burly guy that has it all under
control..grabbing my bags and hugging me…I felt
safe….from the mobs of Nica boys that started after me
to help. Donald and I had pretty tricky drive back to
Popoyo that night. Due to the fact that the roads were
washed out and every turn on the Ochomongo road to
home was a big mud river or down hill mudslide (thanks
to the everyday rains of October) I feel asleep for
awhile ..I mean for 10 minutes until my head hit the
side and we were gliding down a steep hill hit the
bottom and spun out trying to climb the top. I looked
at Donald, knowing we were in deep of being in No
where land and he smiled saying “todo bien”. He
climbed out the truck and lifted his pistol on the
seat beside me as he checked the tires….ha.. I was
definitely safe. We made it back without getting
stuck, I don’t know how..but I owe it all to Donald. I
ran into the rancho with excitement to find Chris and
some of the guys from Feral Green Project (
www.feralgreen.com). Feral Green is a group of guys
with a green vision to bring knowledge of clean bio
friendly ways to the Central America all the while
surfing and running their bio diesel truck on
vegetable oil. They contacted me from information
given to them from Surf Aid and they had found me at
Popoyo Surf Lodge. I hit it off right away with the
four guys, an amazingly easy to get along with group
with lots of humor and passion. I gave them the tour
of the surf breaks the next day and later that night
we went to the church for my weekly art classes. As we
pulled up a group of 20 kids poured out into the
street screaming “Dawn..Amanecer…Rojita…whooooo
hoooo!” I almost cried. The guys in the car turned to
me and said, “Wow these kids really love you” Yes, I
thought..they do, and my purpose here in Nicaragua had
created such a reward in my heart as I leaped as I
looked upon their eager faces. That night myself and
the Feral Green guys read to them about How God had
created the earth and animals, sea, and how important
it was to keep the environment clean. Then we all made
pictures out of pastels and paper of their favorite
part of God’s creation. It made me laugh to see about
10 pictures with myself and orange hair on their
papers with for: Don (they can’t spell my name here).
One of my favorites was done my Isabella the Pastor of
the churches daughter and she had drawn a fish with
the words : Minamis Oscar on the photo. I asked her
over and over what does “minamis” mean. She looked at
me confused and said “Minamis”…”Mi nombre es”…oh…I
said as I laughed she was learning English and was
trying to write “My name is Oscar” …this picture hangs
proudly in my room now.(Look at the pictures attached
for this cute photo). To wrap this letter up I will
go on briefly about some exciting news and events.

1. I have a new room, more like an apartment that JJ
and Kim put me in with my own indoor bathroom and
kitchen. It’s beautiful and comfortable to read and
focus alone in the morning and paint. Thank you JJ and
Kim..I love ya’ll so much

2. I went riding on Ezekiel (his legs are better), he
is full of energy and crazy..a running machine, we
sprinted for an hour on the beach, and as I was
running him in the surf of the beach coast, he
stumbled into a sink hole and fell over rolling on me
as I lay stunned, but ok. He got up shaking looked at
me as I got up and freaked out and ran about 3 miles
home…I looked at him running away and was thankful he
was ok. I was fine..no broken bones…I started laughing
so hard and dove into the waves to rinse off before I
headed back home. (this was the first time I have
fallen off in 8 years..it was bound to happen..ha)

3. Um…not much else..surf lessons continued this
Saturday, and probably going to start working at the
Library with the kids soon. Please continue to pray
for the means for the Co operative to be built here.
For more information on this project, please email me
back or check out
www.nicaraguaartmissions.blogspot.com

Some Cool links to check out this month:

www.feralgreen.com
www.lovelightmelody.org
www.popoyo.com
www.surfnicaragua.com
www.zoomnicaragua.com
www.iamissions.com
www.davidmolnarphotography.com

Love you guys so much

DawnDawn Gray Moragahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00976056190823371215noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5904630311533725566.post-89248534366216709252007-09-26T19:31:00.000-07:002007-09-26T19:33:49.687-07:00Nica Update Sept/OctNicaragua Update
Potato Art/Fractured Rib/Machete’s can’t stop us!

September 25th 2007

Ola Mi Amigos!
Writing a little update on life in Nicaragua.
My Monday-Sunday art classes/surf lessons and
adventures has made life fly by just as the misquitos
do that swarm my entire body every breathing moment.
Ha ha! “Welcome to Nicaragagua’s rainy season” they
say. The rain has been pouring here in Nicaragua for
weeks and has caused a few problems but nothing un
controllable and too demanding. Anyways, this life
makes for some funny stories to share to you. From
falling into mud puddles on my bike, slipping and
fracturing a rib, horse lameness, and dancing in the
rain (explanation to these events is as followed).
Mud Story #1 Well, let’s see it was a Tuesday
Morning and I had a few late afternoon classes and my
morning was wide open for a nice run on the beach or a
few hour surf session. I opted for surfing. JJ threw
me the keys to one of the trucks since it was not
being used and I headed down to Popoyo. It had
rained for a solid 4 hours the night before so the mud
caked the tires and starting causing my wheels to
slide out all over the place. I put the truck in
neutral and pushed it down into four wheel
drive…climbed a few meters up the road and realized it
wasn’t much of a difference in the driving. Hmm…I just
kept on trucking along. I came to a good 2 feet maybe
3 in the middle mud cross and figured that I had been
in the same truck a dozen other times with the guys
and had no problem crossing anything. As I dropped
into low gear I hit two feet into the mud and bogged
out…..Slipping and slinging mud in every direction.
Huh…why was the car stuck. I tried the turn the wheel
in every direction and slowly accelerate technique.
Nada! I had a crowd after 4 minutes of trying, being a
gringa chica in a truck stuck in the mud with 12 Nica
workers standing on the road watching was quite funny.
They ran over to help (like always the people are very
helpful) and laughed as they looked at my tires. “Your
tires are not on!” they shouted in Spanish,
huh….reaching down and turning something on my tires
and smiling saying “Adalante” I climbed right out of
the mud pit with ease, and realized that in these
SUV’s you had to turn your 4x4 on in the outside of
your car as well. I laughed as I headed for the waves.
( By the way for all you people who have helped me
with surfing over the years, I have graduated from a
7’2 to a 6’5 (which was still to big) to a 6’1 18.25
board and I would say I am getting to be a better
surfer.
Mud Story #2
Well..just as usual I am heading to find my horse to
saddle up for a ride when I look up and see him
wobbling without putting pressure on his right hoof..I
ran over to him and got him slowly to the hose to
clean off the mud and see what the problem was. I
learned then that he had a case of hoof rot, called
“White Line Disease” in the states. The soles of his
hooves were rotting because of the moisture from all
the mud, and I had to help. How? I guess going to
Equine college paid off for something, I did my home
made poultices and wrapped his hooves in iodine,
sugar, baking soda, and salt and duck taped a diaper
on his hooves. The locals laughed really hard at this
as I convinced them, I wasn’t stupid when he was
walking slightly better the next day. Now he is un
able to be ridden for at least a month, needs to heal
and also I need Biotin and hoof (growth) supplements
from the USA. Other than that Ezekiel my sweet baby
and usually reliable transportation is doing fine, On
the contrary….I am not..which leads to mud story
…..number….
Mud Story #3
Ok…Well It was another rainy day and Kim and I had
to drive out of town to pick up supplies for people,
horses, you name it. We are always getting into a mess
together, we are like two kids who have michevious
little plans and too much sugar. Our plans always
consist of pulling over the side of some land and
checking out horses, or any sort of animals…two peas
in a pod we are. We were out looking for a goose for
her mail goose “Adam” to have a friend since, Eve died
last week. We pulled down towards a farm and ended up
on an off beaten path road and kept trucking..we found
the place with the goose and she made the deal, 25
bucks for a beautiful new edition…we call her Ginger.
I began to climb up the land cruiser’s tail gate to
adjust the inside of the back for the goose, when all
of a sudden my slippery muddy sandals slipped and I
feel a good three feet and landed on the door as hard
as I could right on my ribs.OUCH….I heard some popping
and then I tried to talk and realized I had knocked my
breath out of me….I was pacing back and forth nervous
and Kim was dealing with the farmer and missed the
whole incident. I climbed into the seat, we packed up
the goose, and I told her I think I cracked something
out of place…Over the next few days of not walking,
laughing, or moving around much…we figured..I
fractured my rib…stupid mud, but I guess I am the
clumsy one..ha. So just a little tid bit on how we
women role in Nicaragua, I will have to say that JJ’s
wife, miss lil’ Kim Yemma is one tough cookie. On the
way back from the farm we saw up ahead three guys with
machetes lining up in the road and we knew something
was up. They were going to try to stop us and I was
getting a lil’ nervous. Kim pushed the lock buttons on
the truck, rolled up the windows and said…”chill
out…hold on” She gunned it and the men were shocked as
one of them started yelling to stop and grabbing onto
the side of the car, we were too fast, and to big, and
my best friend…she was too smart..ha.. It taught me a
lesson in observing your surroundings and keeping
calm. I honestly would of probably stopped…but Hey…I
am learning….and next time I will know.
Mud Story #4
Well, to wrap it up the only stories left are the
facts…classes went well the whole month of October. We
worked on using techniques of applying paint without
using brushes. For example, potatoes, vegetables,
leaves, q-tips, sponges, toothbrushes…and more which
really helped the children see what resources were at
their finger tips. Every week the kids are more
willing, more eager to learn, and more accomplished in
their art skills. I am happy to say that I also spoke
with the town of Las Salinas on the future Cooperative
Art House and we have full permission to proceed. The
next step will be raising the funds and starting the
building plans. I am traveling to Merritt Island FL
for three weeks to stay with JJ and Kim since due to
the heavy rains they shut down the camp for the whole
month of Oct. I had wanted to stay but because of
safety issues they thought it best that I come to the
states. I am relying solely on faith to cover these
cost which I have used to come back and pray that I
can paint a few nice pieces of art to sale in the
states over the next few weeks. I was also honored to
be asked to attend the Christian Surfers National
Conference with IAM missions and represent Nicaragua
Art Missions and the work the Lord is doing in my life
and those I work with here in Nica. I will give
updates after the event which will be Oct. 18,19,20th.
If anyone wants to mail donations for the kids or any
means of support to me while I am in the states,
please send me an email and I can send you the Florida
address for JJ and Kim’s house. I also want to take
the time to thank everyone who has emailed, supported,
gave surf boards to the kids, or any other means of
giving…your generosity has blessed so many people in
Nicaragua. Not only does this leave an impression of
you on the country and the people, but it leaves a
lasting impression daily in my heart to see all their
smiles and thankfulness. Also drop me some emails as I
will be here in the states strictly to paint, organize
my missions, and talk on the phone to all of my
supporters. I love you guys and hope your all being
blessed immensely.

Love In Christ………………Rojita/Amanecer/DawnDawn Gray Moragahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00976056190823371215noreply@blogger.com2
